Last year E.J. Scott (Deborah’s boyfriend) collected many donations with his campaign to lose weight for charity. Now he is ready for the next step and will run his very first half-marathon on August 1st in Chicago and on October 10th the FULL Marathon…. BLINDFOLDED.
E.J. explains what Choroideremia is and why he will run blindfolded.
“Choroideremia is a degenerative and hereditary eye disease that attacks your peripheral vision and erodes it over time until total blindness. I have this disease and am now “legally blind”. I walk with the aid of a walking cane now and if a treatment or cure is not found I will go blind. When? Hard to say. It’s different for everyone.
What’s worse is that my 23 year old brother, Kevin also has this disease and my 5 year old nephew, Liam. There’s a 50/50 chance that my 1 year old nephew, Aidan, has it as well. My mother, sister and aunt are all carriers. And when my grandfather was alive he went blind from it in his 40’s.
WHY AM I RUNNING BLINDFOLDED? As a side effect of the disease my eyes are really sunlight sensitive. So much so that I need to be blindfolded for the Marathon. I will have a guide for both marathons. Each are cousins of mine and experienced runners.”

Hi EJ! I too have this eye disease. I’m apart of the research foundation for fighting blindness and try to keep myself up to date as much as possible. I’m 26 and can barely see at night / low light settings and my peripheral vision is noticeably affected, but still decent. Jean Bennet is a great source of inspiration and I hope clinical human gene therapy trials will start soon!
It’s truly amazing to see someone work so hard.
Thanks,
Brandon
