The Notable Films of 2011: .Catch 44

Opens: 2011
Cast: Forest Whitaker, Bruce Willis, Malin Akerman, Nikki Reed, Deborah Ann Woll
Director: Aaron Harvey

Summary: The story focuses on three women being thrust into an extraordinary situation involving a psychopathic hitman, a grizzled trucker and a delusional line cook.

Analysis: Oddly little is known about this indie crime comedy aside from the three lead female roles have gone through more than a couple of rounds of casting musical chairs. The likes of Maggie Grace, Kate Mara, Laura Ramsey, Sarah Roemer, Lizzy Caplan and Lauren German were all attached at one point or another before the final trio of Malin Akerman (“Watchmen”), Nikki Reed (“Twilight”) and Deborah Ann Woll (“True Blood”) were settled on.

Bruce Willis, Forest Whitaker, Michael Rosenbaum and Brad Dourif also star with Willis as a crime boss behind everything that happens and Whitaker as a dangerously unstable assassin. Aaron Harvey, who last directed the little seen “The Evil Woods”, helms the project which was shot in Louisiana this past summer.

More than seventeen producers are credited on this which seems a little drastic for such a relatively modest revenge meets exploitation flick. With fewer action films offering leading roles to women these days though (let alone having multiple lead female roles), best to enjoy them where you can.

Deborah Ann Woll: Funny* Joke from a Beautiful Woman

The Joke:

Two nuns are driving down a road late at night when a vampire jumps onto the hood of their car. The one nun says to the other, “Quick! Show him your cross!” So the other nun leans out the window and shouts, “Get off our f–ing car!”

About the Jokester:

Deborah Ann Woll likes gruesome animal-attack videos. Much more than she thought she would, at least. The 25-year-old Brooklyn native watched them to get into character for her role as befanged teenager Jessica Hamby on the HBO vampire drama True Blood. Before the study of crocodiles severing deer limbs became a job requirement, Woll spent ten years in theater, which led to guest roles on shows like CSI, My Name Is Earl, and The Mentalist. True Blood provided her first recurring gig, not to mention the fresh perspective on gender roles that comes with a pair of fangs: “Having the girl be the vampire, with these external shows of power, just turns the story on its head. The [fangs] flicking out, to me, it’s kind of like a girl boner.” That just doesn’t happen on The Mentalist.

Historically, pop culture is full of vampires who are calm, collected, and more than a little mysterious, which is what makes Deborah Ann Woll on True Blood such a hoot. Her fledgling vamp Jessica is none of those things — instead, she’s equal parts giddy and grossed-out (and blessedly free of those centuries’ worth of wisdom that make most other vampires such a drag). Heading into season three, Woll’s just as much of a delight as ever, and even feature film auteurs like Paul Thomas Anderson are beginning to take note.

What’s in store for Jessica this year — and for Woll herself? Movieline talked to the 25-year-old actress about the third season’s arc and her upcoming projects.

Jessica is my favorite character on the show, but I have to confess that when she was introduced, I worried that she might be really annoying. How do you keep her endearing when she could so easily tip over the other way?
Gosh, first of all, thank you! I’m glad she’s your favorite. The only thing I think you could do wrong with the character is not commit to it, maybe. You know, people do things that are wrong or annoying or inconsiderate. We are not a perfect race — and neither are vampires. [Laughs] I don’t particularly believe that acting is about winning people over or having them like your character.

A New York minute with ‘True Blood’ star Deborah Ann Woll

Deborah Ann Woll sinks her fangs into the new season of “True Blood,” starting tonight on HBO. She stars as Jessica Hamby, a teen vampire who struggles with her identity. The Brooklyn-born actress, 25, never had that problem.

“I knew coming out of the womb that [acting] was what I was supposed to do,” Woll says. At about 14, she began enrolling in acting programs around the city and at her Brooklyn Heights high school, the Packer Collegiate Institute. It’s paid off. Besides “True Blood,” Woll has three films in the works.

What can we expect from Jessica this season?
[Producer] Alan Ball has said before that this season is about identity, and I think that’s what’s happening for Jessica. It’s a lot about discovering more about my vampiric nature versus my human nature and what’s the right balance for Jessica. Bill [Stephen Moyer] has chosen a very mainstream human kind of existence, and Eric [Alexander Skarsgard] has chosen a very vampire existence. Every member of the undead has to find their own personal [path], And Jessica’s working her way through that this season.

‘True Blood’ star no Southern belle

Louisiana accent. Brooklyn accent.

Yes, they are very different. But in subtle ways, they are too much the same.

Brooklyn native Deborah Ann Woll, who plays budding teen vampire Jessica in True Blood, had to walk that fine line when she first took the role.

“In the very beginning the Southern accent was a challenge, because some of the sounds are kind of close to that Yankee, Brooklyn sound,” said Woll, 25. “So my problem was, when I would fall out of the Southern accent, I would fall into a Brooklyn accent, which sounds really, really wrong for the part.

“But that was in the first season. I felt much better by the second season.”

The third season of the savage and sexy True Blood gets under way Sunday, June 13 on HBO Canada. Woll still is pinching herself over the fact that her character has become a major part of this acclaimed series.

Although author Charlaine Harris created a set of indelible characters in her Sookie Stackhouse books, one of the most striking denizens of TRUE BLOOD,Alan Ball’s HBO series adaptation of the novels, doesn’t appear in the print version at all. Deborah Ann Woll as Jessica, the bratty yet vulnerable teen turned into a vampire by Stephen Moyer’s reluctant Bill last season, continues to be a riveting original.
